Blog 4 Love is an interesting emotion

I found the expression of Love to be quite interesting as I compared the stories "The Horse Dealers Daughter" by D.H. Lawrence and "The Lady with the Dog" by Anton Chekov. Each story has an unusual way of finding love, for instance in Checkov's story the character Gurov as a man married with children, he is described as being a ladies man who had very little regard for women. "In the society of men he was board, not himself, with them he was cold and uncommunicative; but with women he felt free ..... He know there was some force that drew women to him (p5). This guy is very impressed with himself, until he meets Anna, who he proceeds to fall in love with.  I felt as though the author was leaning in the direction of love but It was surprising the way it unfolds.  In the beginning he was just using her for his own comfort with the intention of moving onto the next woman, however his obsession continues to deepen and he becomes more smitten over time on the other hand Lawrence's story took me by surprise, his style of writing is such that there is no sign of love until the doctor catches a glimpse of her in the grave yard and cannot turn away from her gaze "she lifted her eyes, feeling him looking, their eyes met....her face seemed to mesmerize him, their was heavy power in her eyes which laid hold of his whole being, as if he had drunk some powerful drug. He had been feeling weak before now the life came back into him, he felt delivered from his own fretted daily self " (p105). This example of love is one that will strengthen each individual, they each have needs and they are ready to allow themselves to fulfill them for each other unlike the first story where they are both married to other people and cannot full fill the needs they have to form a true long term  relationship with each other.

  1. I agree with you that they used each other to fulfill their needs. I believe that need is love. I got the same 2 messages from both "The Lady With the Pet Dog" and "The Horse-Dealer's Daughter". Everyone needs love to be complete and happy, and the heart wants what the heart wants. In both stories everyone was very unhappy until they found love in each other. Mabel even tries to commit suicide. Also, in both stories, no one was looking for love. It just happened. They all followed what their heart wanted, and that was love with the other person.

  2. I like your summary of these stories. I agree that the man in the first story was very full of himself and wanted all the women he could get. He didnt realize he would actually have such strong feelings for this woman until she was gone. These stories both have the same idea of love and are told in differnt ways. good job!

  3. I agree that each story develop in a singular way the love theme. But also, I believe that "love" by itself doesn't sound a great deal, but the way the authors develop it is the interesting point. In "The lady with the pet dog," the author describe to people that are soul mates, but they don't know because they are very involved in each one world. Guruv is interested in the ladies atmosphere, but at the same time is ignored by his wife because she believes herself more intelligent that her husband. Anna is also ignored by her husband because she is not intelligent enough to be integrated in that business world which her husband belongs to. They don't realize their love until they can see all the problems around them: marriage, children and a cruel society that doesn't accept divorced people. Before these was only passion around them and necesity of each other.
On the othe hand, the "Horse-Dealer's Daughter" its main point is love which is born in two lonely souls that are soak up by each ones' enviromont. Mabel is a woman that is rejected by her brothers by considered her ugly and useless. The doctor's priority is his carrer at the point that he forgets his sentimental life. But all above change when each one realizes their loneliness.

  4. I absolutely loved and enjoyed the way you interpreted the emotion of love in both stories! You made such valid points on each narrator and you used the text to back up your main ideas. I also wanted to add that the way you wrote blog number four made me want to leave a comment just to tell you how much I enjoyed reading it. I also chose to talk about love in both short stories as well, but I just realized I only went on talking about one story and didn't get the opportunity to compare and contrast the love seen in both stories. In both stories the way the narrator introduced love in the stories is different but is similar in the way that in both stories we get to see that love is found when you least expect it and sometimes with people that you would have never thought possible to meet in your life.

  5. Deb,

Thanks for your interpretation. Both Chekov's and Lawrence's stories appear to be about unsuspecting love and the process of finding love with someone you never expected to fall in love with. In Chekov's "The Lady with the Dog", Gurov is a married man who has become comfortable being unfaithful to his wife. In many of his affairs he has created an image that is contrary to the man that he really is, "Women loved him for the man they thought he was" Chekov 475). After numerous affairs, and many years of living a lie, Gurov finally believes that he has found his soulmate. "His head was grey; he finally found love for the first time in his life" (Chekov 476). In comparison, Lawrence's "The Horse Dealer's Daughter" tells the story of Fergusson, a man that also falls in love when he least expects it. "I love you, I love you"!-unlike himself (Lawrence 485)proclaims Fergusson to Mabel, as if he suddenly discovers a raw emotion hidden deep within. Both stories share a parallel distinction between love and longing.

  6. I Agree with you about the contrast between the stories at the end of your post. The stories in a way were exact opposites where love in " The lady with the Dog" pretty much creates problems. As opposed to the other story where love ends up being the solution for problems in a way
